IAML-conferentie 2003 Tallinn (1)

De IAML-conferentie die van 6–12 juli van dit jaar in Tallinn (Estland) werd georganiseerd, werd bezocht door o.a. NVMB-voorzitter Gert Floor en door Hanneke Kuiper (OB Amsterdam). Beide brengen verslag uit.
In de eerste bijdrage (van Gert Floor) staat ook de korte rede die hij hield over het werk van de NVMB in Nederland.

Estland probeert zo snel mogelijk aan te sluiten bij het Westen. Dat blijkt niet alleen uit de grote inzet waarmee men de IAML-conferentie organiseerde, maar komt ook naar voren in het straatbeeld van Tallinn. Overal wordt gebouwd en de sfeer op straat in deze oude Hanzestad doet zowel Oost-Europees als Scandinavisch aan. Finland ligt heel dichtbij! In een modern hotel buiten het centrum vond de IAML-conferentie plaats.

Uit Nederland waren hier aanwezig: Martie Severt (die als penningmeester van het IAML-bestuur een helder financieel jaarverslag uitbracht), Katja Brooijmans, Paul Kuik en Frits Zwart van het Nederlands Muziek Instituut, Joop Meuleman (Fontys Hogeschool Tilburg), Hanneke Kuiper (O.B. Amsterdam) en ikzelf.

Op zondag 6 juli trof ik hier de afgevaardigden uit vele andere landen voor de jaarlijkse bijeenkomst van de Council, de ledenraad, die voorafgaat aan de eigenlijke conferentie.  In dit stukje wil ik kort stilstaan bij wat hier gebeurt.
In de Council wordt verslag gedaan van de activiteiten welke het bestuur van IAML en de diverse commissies het afgelopen jaar hebben ondernomen. De vertegenwoordigers van de nationale afdelingen (de “national branches”) hebben stemrecht bij de besluitvorming en brengen hier een soort jaarverslag uit. Voor Nederland deed ik dat en de tekst daarvan vindt u onder dit stukje.
Ook overhandigde ik hier de voorzitter, John Roberts uit Berkeley, de officiële uitnodiging om de conferentie in 2009 in Nederland te organiseren.

Dit alles is een soort “de klok gelijk zetten” voor de conferentie, waar naast vele inhoudelijke bijdragen ook voortgang geboekt moet worden in de samenwerking binnen de internationale commissies en werkgroepen op vele terreinen, zoals bv. het catalogiseren met Unimarc, auteursrechten, een digitaal overzicht van muziekarchieven, maar ook de voortzetting van het tijdschrift Fontes en de grote internationale bibliografische projecten RILM (samenvattingen van literatuur op muziekgebied vanaf heden terugwerkend, nu tot 1967), RIPM (een internationaal register op -vooral- 19e eeuwse muziektijdschriften) en RISM, een internationale toegang tot muziekbronnen van 1600 tot 1800.
Aan het eind van de week wordt dan een tweede bijeenkomst gehouden, waar verslag wordt gedaan van de vorderingen in de conferentieweek, de lijnen voor het komend jaar worden meegedeeld en hierover besluiten worden genomen.
Het doet wat droog aan, al die verslagen, maar het is wel degelijk belangrijk dat dit gebeurt, omdat zo iedereen op de hoogte kan blijven van wat er omgaat in deze grote vereniging en er greep blijft op de voortgang van de vele activiteiten en initiatieven daarin.

Members of the Board, members of the Council and all of you, gathered here.
In the year after my first IAML conference in Berkeley, our national branch has developed several activities for their still growing number of members.
Most of the work is being done by committee-members. The national board coordinates, keeps control, develops new initiatives and tries to make our members interested.
Our Program-committee organised two meetings, one about collection management and one introducing four music genres: contemporary music, New Age, Jazz and today’s pop music.And here the program committee ties to the Education committee, which twice last year organised an introductory course in World Music, attended by about 50 people from all over the country.
At our annual meeting the education committee proposed a choice between a course in one of the four music genres: jazz, and an elementary course in music theory. This elementary course, which won the support, is meant for staff working in the front office of the music department of a public library.
In the Netherlands, the situation has become such, that people working at information desks, often lack musical education. Staff trained as music librarians are declared specialists and are placed in the back office or in a more overlooking management function.
Our Interlibrary Loan-committee has to cope with other problems.

Last year this committee recommended a system for a more efficient interlibrary loan of printed music. This was received cordially by the large public libraries in our country, but practical realization of the proposals is not in our hands. Lobbying and diplomatic deliberations will be necessary, as will be fundraising.
Strongly connected with an efficient interlibrary loan system are developments in ICT. Several new initiatives made it necessary for our branch to appoint a coordinator for this field. The input of music-related subjects in larger national ICT- initatives like “bibliotheek.nl” (library dot nl) and a national “information desk” for public libraries (aladin dot nl) have become more important last year.

Our website has just moved to a new adress and will be built on and kept up to date by members of yet another committee: the editorial staff of our Newsletter. We hope, that in the new virtual surroundings discussion between members will flourish. The high costs of our printed and mailed version prompted the editorial staff to search for possibilities of an attractive electronic version of the newsletter.

Looking forward to the 2009 conference in the Netherlands, we are trying to raise more involvement among our members with IAML subjects and what is happening here, at the conferences. So far, it has been a little abstract to some of our members

As always: much work to do, but it is worthwhile!
